New Meat Science Facility

New Meat Science Facility

One of the region's leaders in meat sciences, is University of Idaho's Meat Laboratory and includes Vandal Brand Meats a full service butcher shop which employees students. The program is getting a new and much deserved facility as Jerry Haun, owner of Hauns Meat and Sausage and executive secretary of Northwest Meat Processors Association, explains

Haun: "They've started and they are going to build a new facility. It's going to be a state of art. They are going to have all new from the ground up. There are almost at the stage to be working the architects. They are going to build on a new site that is a little more user-friendly where they are going to be. It is going to be a great thing for our association and young people in the Northwest. There is a need for people to be educated to be in the meat industry. It is hard for us to find people that have more than one basic skill — we are all multi-taskers in our industry, our small processors. They learn that at the college. Timetable, they are hoping to break ground this year — it will take a couple of years before they get it all done. It is quite a process. It is not like just putting up just a classroom it got a cooler, kill floor, all kind of classrooms and new equipment."

Haun says that those industry are looking forward to the new facility being completed.
