Research of GE Feed to Livestock Reviewed

A recent study reviewed prior research on animal health and genetically modified materials in regards to genetically engineered animal feed. Cooperative Extension Specialist for Animal Biotechnology and Genomics at the University of California-Davis Alison Van Eenennaam explains more about the study that reviewed the last 30 years of research.
Van Eenennaam: “We looked at the field data sets from literally from the billions of animals that ate genetically engineered feed every year. These field data sets did not reveal unfavorable or perturbed trends in livestock health and productivity which agrees with the control studies done in the peer-reviewed literature of which there are literally hundreds. I feel like this information isn’t getting out there.”
A few studies have seen the bulk of the media attention lately suggesting genetic engineering is dangerous. She disagrees
Van Eenennaam: “There are a lot of media coverage of these kind of one-off little studies as if that is the only study that has been done. And the hundreds of carefully controlled experiments that don’t show sensational results get very little attention from the media. It is pretty frustrating as a scientist to see all of these studies ignored while all of these sensational and often poorly designed studies get all of the media attention. Really the data is pretty convincing that the there is no problems with the animals eating genetically modified feed.”
She adds the study was funded by the California Experimental Funds of the University of California-Davis, and not funded by any company. ??
