Firefighters Remembered & Pesticide Collection

Firefighters Remembered & Pesticide Collection. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report.

The three firefighters that died in Wednesdays wildfire near Twisp, Washington are being remembered. The firefighters were engaged in initial attack operations and were involved in a vehicle accident when it is believed that the fire overtook the vehicle. Four additional firefighters were injured. Washington Governor Jay Inslee traveled to the area yesterday to pay tribute to the men. He also requested a federal Emergency Declaration to provide additional resources in fighting the fires. Other tributes came in from Congressman Dan Newhouse who also said he was in full support of the Governors request.

NEWHOUSE: A Declaration of Disaster has to be made by the President and so that;'s the request by the delegation to do that to try to get as much help to Central Washington as we possibly can not only to combat the fires that are raging as we speak but in the aftermath to help rebuild and clean up and get people back on their feet.

Idaho ag producers, dealers, professional applicators and homeowners who are storing unusable pesticides will have a safe, legal and free opportunity to dispose of them when the Idaho State Department of Agriculture conducts its unusable-pesticide collections.

Pesticides include herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, rodenticides or anything with a "cide" at the end of it. The collection has been going on since 1993 with over 1.75 million pounds of unusable pesticides collected. If you have questions call your local ISDA office.

That's today's Northwest Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network of the West.
