Animal Cruelty Charges & Raw Milk Study

Animal Cruelty Charges & Raw Milk Study

Animal Cruelty Charges & Raw Milk Study plus Ag Land Warning. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report.

A new report by the CDC is reaffirming arguments against efforts to ease restrictions on the sale of raw milk to consumers. Both Washington and Idaho allow the sale of raw milk. The National Milk Producers Federation's Christopher Galen says the report sheds light on the raw milk issue.

GALEN: With the expansion of the availability of raw milk in some states that have loosened the restrictions or eliminated the restrictions on products that we're seeing more people become sick from it so not a great surprise here when you liberalize the sales of something that can have a negative public health impact, you're going to get more people becoming sick. So this isn't just the dairy industry saying this, this is the federal Centers for Disease Control whose job it is to keep track of foodborne illness outbreaks.

Animal cruelty charges have been brought against a Payette, Idaho woman. Tamara Wright was arrested on Monday after a local veterinarian determined the horses were quote, "at a critical stage." Payette police had already warned the woman about the starving horses and had been keeping tabs on the animals conditions. Wright was also served with formal seizure papers so that the animals could be adopted by new owners. The horses are currently being cared for by volunteers at the Payette Partners Rescue Ranch in New Plymouth.

Now, it seems the world is losing valuable agricultural lands. Susan Carter has more.
