Recent wildfires across the northwest have caused considerable damage for farmers and ranchers alike. Farm Service Administration has come to the table with assistance for producers with losses. FSA State Executive Director, Judy Olson talks about their Livestock Indemnity Program.

OLSON: We are going to need documentation of livestock deaths and that must provide sufficient data for us to identify the kind, type, weight range of the livestock and of course the numbers that perished.

She says there are lots of kinds of documentation that can be used including rendering truck receipts or certificates, national guard records, veterinary records and more. She also says documentation of where the animals were located is helpful.

OLSON: Contracts or leases of land where they are grazing or proof of ownership. Maps that indicate the areas that they were in before the fire and the numbers of animals there. Those kinds of documentation are also very, very helpful.

If you have suffered any losses due to the fires you need to contact your local FSA office as soon as possible.

OLSON: The LIP or livestock indemnity program payment are equal to 75% of the market value of the applicable livestock on the day before the date of death. That again is reliant on these records to establish the age and weight and size and numbers and values of the various animals. But we don't have to do that the day the producers reports.

That's today's Line On Agriculture. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
