Pacific Northwest Hay Update

Pacific Northwest Hay Update

Here with the weekly hay update is USDA Grain and Livestock Reporter Greg Sanders who shares last week’s hay report.
Sanders: “The Columbia Basin hay report — we had a little over 16,000 tons of hay trade this week. Compared last week, alfalfa for domestic and export markets were steady to weak. Premium export hay that was tarped brought $220 to $240. Alfalfa small squares for retail and stable accounts sold for $250 to $260. Orchard for retail and stable accounts sold at $260 to $275 in the small bales. Timothy for export hays premium large square bales sold for $240 to $250.”
In Idaho compared to the previous week, hay trade was very slow as most of the trade area in the last couple weeks have gotten heavy rains and damaged hay that was on the ground. Demand was light to moderate for non-rained on supplies. Alfalfa large supreme square bales were selling $207 to $230 a ton.
In Oregon, hay prices were generally steady compared to the previous week.  There was buyer interest but the volume of trading was slower than the week previous.  Rain and thunderstorms in most locations is making it hard to get the crops off the field. Klamath Basin premium alfalfa for export was being sold for $250 per ton. Central Oregon’s large square good to premium alfalfa hay sold for $230 a ton.
