If you are needing forage production insurance coverage but have not been eligible, Jo Lynne Seufer, Risk Management Specialist with USDA's Risk Management Agency says you should look again.

SEUFER: The forage production crop policy expansion approved to several counties in our region and those include Benewah, Boundary, Kootenai, Teton, and Twin Falls counties in Idaho and in Pend Oreille, Spokane, and Stevens counties in Washington. Our coverage was previously available in Klamath and Malheur counties in Oregon but to have these additional counties approved for the availability is really meeting a lot of producers needs here in our region.

This forage coverage is available to all irrigated practices in all the available counties.

SEUFER: And then the non-irrigated practices is available in select (counties). The alfalfa type is insurable in all the counties, however the alfalfa-grass mixture type is only available in select counties. Producers should visit with an insurance agent about requesting coverage by written agreement if a type or practice is not insurable in their counties.

She says they encourage producers to contact their local crop insurance agent no later than September 30th.

SEUFER: And those producers outside these counties can still get coverage through a written agreement, again by September 30th.

The sales closing date is the last day to buy federal crop insurance. Current policyholders and uninsured growers must make all of their decisions on crop insurance coverage, especially which crops to insure and what level and type of coverage to get before the sales closing date.

That's today's Line On Agriculture. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
