The Guru of canola. Dr.Jack Brown, professor in the University of Idaho College of Agricultural and Life Sciences knows so much about canola. In a phone conversation he talked about all the reasons why this is a great rotational crop and you might be surprised at some of the numbers. “Canola can be very profitable in winter canola stands. Canola yields can easily be 3000 pounds on a crop fallow system and on a continual cropping averages mainly irrigated winter canola can obtain four thousand pounds. If you look at even 3000 pounds at $.25 per pound, it is a lot of money. That is $750 which is an excellent return and competes very well with wheat, in fact, the last 3 or 4 years, winter canola crops have exceeded the profitability obtained with wheat because of course with wheat you have to have 100 bushels to be competitive with 3000 pound canola Even in circles where they have irrigation, people are looking at the rotational benefits of canola before crops like onions and primarily potatoes and the quality and yield of potatoes increase significantly after canola compared to after wheat.
