The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's regulatory changes – set to begin on Jan. 1 – will require producers to obtain authorization from a licensed veterinarian to use medically important antibiotics for prevention, control or treatment of a specifically identified disease in feed. I am sure there are all kinds of thoughts on the part of livestock producers with regard to yet more government regulations, some good and probably a lot bad. But imagine having 1000 head of cattle or 2000 pigs or what ever it is you are raising. How in the world do you, as the producer, and/or your vet know which animal has gotten which amount of medicine. That is a major tracking problem but, for every problem, theoretically there is a solution. One of those comes out of Ames, Iowa from a company called Micro Technologies with their integrated solution called GlobalVetLINK (GVL®). Here is integration manager for Micro Technologies, Jill Wagner: "The integration enables cattle producers to better track and manage feed-grade antibiotics. Customers will have access to solutions that automatically track the inventory, prescribed dosage and number of animals, and then generate VFD requests or notify producers when a VFD is nearing its expiration date."
