Dr. James Radtke, Senior Vice President of Product Development for Cibus has been part of the team that has developed non-transgenic SU Canola. I had some questions. “Why is Canola such a good crop? Canola is quite a profitable crop depending on where you are. Particularly in the northern tier throughout much of Canada, it is the main cash crop. Farmers prefer to grow that over wheat and barley and over some of the pulses. When you go further south, you start fighting corn and soy. Corn and soy will give a farmer more of a return if they are able to grow up. Up until recently, soybeans never really got into North Dakota because you didn't have anything that was adapted to that short season. More recently there have been a number of new soybean varieties that do well there and further north and one farmers have that option, they like to go soybean. The other nice thing about canola is the root system is a very deep tap root and so it loosens up the soil.
