Dr. Francis Larney is a researcher with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada at the Lethbridge Research Centre in Alberta, Canada. His research shows the benefits of leaving stubble to prevent wind erosion. "Leaving stubble in the field reduces wind velocity at the level of the ground. Yes. Because the stubble, even though it was quite short, acts like a mini wind break. If you think about the wind speed at the soil's surface, if it is just bare soil, there is nothing there standing in the way of slowing down the wind but if you leave standing stubble, the wind speed above the stubble can be quite high but at soil surface level, the wind speed is reduced. So much so that it doesn't have the power to lift the top soil and make it airborne.
