To keep cows in top shape, it's important to understand the key reproductive milestones during the year and to provide proper nutrition throughout those varying states.

That's according to Cliff Lamb with the University of Florida, who says the second trimester of a cow's life generally represents the best opportunity to efficiently improve body condition."We want cows to have better body conditions, a five or a six, when they calve because it stimulates the rest of the reproductive system, being in a decent condition when she calves will allow her to start her estrous cycles quicker and give her a chance to become pregnant sooner."

Lamb also says it's critical to monitor and improve a cow's body condition leading up to breeding. Increasing condition at significant points during the reproductive cycle is key. "The one thing we have to be very cognizant of, especially from a reproductive standpoint, is making sure that the cows are in an increasing plan of nutrition, increasing their condition of protein reading is extremely important."
