National Council of Farmer Cooperatives recently issued the following statement: "The recent Senate vote was deeply disappointing to America's farmer co-ops and their farmer-owners. The legislation would have helped avoid a costly patchwork of state labeling laws, increased the information about food available to consumers, and given farmers some certainty as they make future planting decisions.

"Despite the outcome today, this issue and the need to resolve it will not go away. There continues to be ongoing discussions with senators from both sides of the aisle on finding a compromise that can achieve broad based Senate support. We remain committed to finding a path forward on this issue when Congress returns after Easter recess."

But Certified Dietician Jen Haugen had this to say: "Farmers already are doing responsible work on their farms. They are doing sustainability. I think that gets lost sometimes in the conventional aspects because they are already doing it and sometimes the buzzwords can pop up and make it seem more sensational on the other end of things but I work also as a school dietitian and nothing comes local from a certain farm, even close by, however we know that our food is safe. I have done the research, I worked on it all year last year. The foods that we serve our healthy, they are nutritional. The buzzwords sometimes can make you think that things are better but in reality all the food is nutritional and healthy."
