Ingestion of mycotoxins

An Alltech Harvest Analysis for 2015 confirms swine and poultry feeds are at risk of significant amounts of mycotoxins. The next obvious question is what does feeding animals with significant amounts of mycotoxin in their food do to them physiologically.

Ingestion of mycotoxins can cause reduced feed intake, damage internal organs such as the liver and lungs, suppress the immune system, increase the number of gut pathogens and susceptibility to disease and cause poor vaccination response.

“Management practices to prevent exposure are always the best course of action,” said Dr. Max Hawkins who is an Alltech Mycotoxin Management team nutritionist. “Producers should consider testing feed samples to understand levels prior to storage and to understand the possible synergistic effects multiple mycotoxins can play in animal health and performance.”
