Wild Horses

What is it about horses that makes us all so emotional? I have done so many stories that result in such emotional reactions when the topic is horses. Trucking of horses, slaughterhouses for horses, wild horses, the list goes on. But how is it that some judge, undoubtedly in an urban setting can rule and make policy on wild horses being released onto vast BLM acreages? Case in point, the story of rancher Kevin Borba on the Fish Creek HMA in Eureka, Nevada. He runs his cattle on permitted property with the BLM. I watched a video from a group called Protect the Harvest in which Kevin, who ranched on his permitted land witnessed the release of 185 formerly captured wild horses. This, despite the fact that there is not enough water or food on any of the land around him to support his cattle and wildlife, much less the horses which will proliferate like rabbits.

Listen to Mr. Borba: “ There are ranches that have been here for generations and they have lost. It’s all gone. We are going to be one of them people too. My ranch is done. I will walk away and maybe our fight will bring it to the public’s eye so the government will start helping us instead of going against us.”

So some bleeding heart liberal judge, far removed from Mr. Borba’s ranch and who probably can’t stand the thought of euthanizing these horses in a humane way, instead drives lifetime ranchers out of business and the horses he released… will undoubtedly die a cruel death of thirst and starvation.
