Thad Schutt, owner of Royal Organic Products told me about his long journey toward producing a pelletized compost product for precision application with direct seed drills. ”We started composting back around 2004. We were previously connected with a mint flavor company. We realized we could start our own business unit and take on other materials. Over the years we built a reputation for quality and we were delivering to orchards and vineyards throughout central Washington as well as open ground and back in around 2010, we were approached by a sustainable, no-till grain co-op. They stated that they wanted to use compost however in a no-till situation, how do you apply it? We put our heads together and started working on a methodology to do that. It took five years of total R and D and four years of actual field trials. Then crawling in and out of no-till drills, figuring out how it would work then engineered and designed a blended compost pellet that would go into the no-till drills and air drills.”
