According to a publication dedicated to the pig industry, Porcine epidemic diarrhea is caused by a coronavirus which was widespread earlier this year in the US. The virus damages the the gut and causes loss of fluid and dehydration.

Acute outbreaks of PED occur when the virus is first introduced into a susceptible population. In such cases up to 100% of sows may be affected. The incubation period is approximately 2 days and diarrhea lasts for 7 to 14 days. In sucking pigs the disease can be mild or severe with mortalities up to 40%.

In Orlando FL, Dr. Greg Cline has announced that Boehringer Ingelheim has helped put together a website of information. This is a web based one stop shop for producers and veterinarians and SOURCE is an acronym: Dr. Cline explained the acronym: S state desired goals O obtain the correct status U understanding your risks R reducing your risks C constructing a solution E executing that solution. This makes a logical flow. It allows the producer to systematically and holistically evaluate their system. This way they can better control and manage PED. www.pedresource.com .
