From the website healthdiaries.com come the following words of wisdom. French researchers found that a flavanoid found only in apples may protect post-menopausal women from osteoporosis and may also increase bone density. One recent study shows that children with asthma who drank apple juice on a daily basis suffered from less wheezing. A study on mice at Cornell University found that the quercetin in apples may protect brain cells from the kind of free radical damage that may lead to Alzheimer's disease. The pectin in apples lowers LDL ("bad") cholesterol. According to a study of 10,000 people, those who ate the most apples had a 50 percent lower risk of developing lung cancer. The pectin in apples supplies an acid to the body which lowers the body's need for insulin and may help in the management of diabetes. Hey this isn’t the Dr. Oz show, so why all the health notes on apples? Simple. This year’s apple yield throughout the Northwest is turning out to be a bumper crop according to Kelly Henggeler, owner of Henggeler Packing Co. in Fruitland, Idaho: “There seemed to be plenty of apples around, Dave, that’s for sure. To what do you credit such a bumper harvest? Ideal growing conditions and the absence of hail and frost. Is the quality good? Anytime we don’t have those weather events, it will result in a pretty good crop and what we have seen in the Northwest so far this year is a real quality crop.” Thanks to mother nature and cheers to good health.
