Vilsack on Disaster Sign Ups part 2

Vilsack on Disaster Sign Ups. I'm Greg Martin with today's Line On Agriculture.

Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack is trying to make sure you get all that is coming to you. He is urging people to with disaster claim to get signed up with your local FSA office before September 30th. Producers here in the northwest that have had loss due to fires should get signed up. Livestock producers with losses from wolf predation may have to seek help elsewhere.

VILSACK: The fire certainly does. To the extent that there has been livestock damage as a result of a natural disaster then that's what's covered by these Farm Bill programs. The Farm Bill when it was signed by the President this February re-instituted the disaster programs that lapsed October 2011. I'm not sure about the predator situation, I'll have to check on that but certainly the fire situation is covered.

Vilsack says that for some of the programs, just signing up is not enough.

VILSACK: For the Indemnity program, for the NAP program and for the Tree Assistance program they have to actually have their work and their process completed before September 30 so it's really, really important for them, they really got to get on the ball here and make sure that their paperwork is in and acted on. As I say, we can turn it around within a couple of days if at all possible.

He says there is a great deal of information on their website.

VILSACK: If they just go on our website at usda.gov/farmbill they'll see information about these deadlines. They'll also potentially be able to register for one of those appointments under the forage program online. So they can do it either by making a call to their local office, stopping in their local office or going online at usda.gov/farmbill.

That's today's Line On Agriculture. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
