Farmer's Market Week

Farmer's Market Week. I'm Greg Martin with today's Line On Agriculture.

If you like great, fresh produce and other fresh from the farm products then you should be visiting your local farmers market. Mike Louisell, Public Information Officer for the Washington State Department of Agriculture talks about National Farmer's Market Week.

LOUISELL: It starts this Sunday and goes to next Saturday. Governor Inslee issued a proclamation. It's a great time for people to recognize you can buy your food from so many sources in this country it's incredible. Farmer's markets offer a great opportunity for people to try out new foods and learn more about where their food comes from.

Louisell says there are a great variety of markets to choose from.

LOUISELL: Small start-up markets. You know the variety of commodities both food and some of the artisan goods you can get are fun and it's just fun shopping or even just sight-seeing at a farmer's market, walking through there. Some of them have entertainment. I think kids really get a kick out of going with their parents.

You can also discover vendors that will supply you year-round.

LOUISELL: They do make connections where they don't have to sell just at the farmer's market. They have other areas that they con connect with consumers and get more people interested in being repeat buys, repeat customers of their products.

Last year alone in the state over $42-million dollars were spent which is a 4% increase from 2012.

That's today's Line On Agriculture. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
