Northwest Junior Sheep Exposition

Northwest Junior Sheep Exposition

Northwest Junior Sheep Exposition. I'm Greg Martin with today's Line On Agriculture.

The Northwest Junior Sheep Exposition began back in 1969 in the Ellensburg, Washington area but was moved to Moses Lake, Washington and is held in conjunction with the Washington State Ram sale. Sarah Smith is a WSU Extension Animal Sciences Regional Specialist says while the sale is for youth there are other opportunities as well.

SMITH: We've done some things that try to incorporate them back together. We have what we call the Futurity Ewe Lamb Class which both youth and adults can enter a eweling into that class. That ewe will then be sold and then she can come back the next year and show for premium. And we really try to encourage the older generation that's involved in the ram sale to be involved with anything from judging posters , helping with the activities and then we try to get the youth over in to the ram sale.

The youth side is for ages 8 to 21. The event runs July 18 & 19 at the Grant County, Washington fairgrounds but is open to anyone in the northwest.

SMITH: Last year we had over 70 and this year we are taking them in and I have 70 right now and my secretary told me there was a big pile that just came in, there's probably another 15 to 20. It really is an event that always seems to amaze me because this is really money out of their pockets to come. We give some nice premiums but they come for the activity and the level and the camaraderie.
