Ag Weather Impacts

After a fairly quiet early and mid November, look for an active weather pattern for this Thanksgiving Holiday weekend. High pressure will keep areas of fog and freezing fog today into early Wednesday across the Columbia Basin. Then a series of Pacific weather systems will traverse across the area starting late Wednesday. The best chances for rain will be Wednesday night through early Friday, but smaller chances for rain will continue into Sunday. Plan on rainfall amounts of ¼ to ½ inch in most areas, but farms west of Yakima to Ellensburg and near the Blue Mountains should get ½ to 1 inch. This will slow late fall field work going into the end of the month, but add to the depleted soil moisture. The Columbia Basin is still rated abnormally dry to moderate drought. We should see some development of pastures and winter wheat because the pacific airmass combined with insulating clouds will allow temperatures to average above normal. Soil temperatures have fallen in the mid and upper 30s and should rise into the upper 30s and lower 40s over the next 7 days. The multiple weather systems will likely put significant moisture in the mountains with 1 to 2 feet of snow above 4500 feet. Hope you have a great Thanksgiving holiday.
