Senator Joni Ernst has taken on HSUS in a new fight to keep "Meatless Monday" out of the military, making sure Defense Department cafeterias will continue to offer soldiers "meat options [every day] that meet or exceed the nutritional standards established in the most recent Dietary Guidelines for Americans" or have funds withheld.   HSUS has succeeded in helping the U.S. Coast Guard Academy cut its meat consumption by as much as 10 percent in three years.

Senator Ernst called the push for "Meatless Monday" "misguided at best" and declared, "Our men and women in uniform should have the option to consume the protein they need, including meat, on a daily basis."

Some may argue that this is not the first time the military has cut meat consumption, an idea that was introduced along with "Wheatless Wednesday" during World War I was an effort to conserve key staples, and the idea was brought back again during World War II.  Of course, there were a lot of things the armed forces have improved upon since 1914 and 1943, and I think Generals Pershing and Patton (and their comrades) would support the Senator's efforts.
