The Idaho State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) will conduct a stakeholder meeting on the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) on Tuesday at the Clarion Inn, 1249 Tapadera Avenue, Ontario. The informational session is designed for small- and mid-size farms and facilities. It will provide an overview of the federal law's requirements and cover aspects of compliance in Idaho. FSMA is widely considered the most sweeping change to food safety regulation since the 1940s and will have a direct impact on many Idaho growers, processors and shippers.

The ISDA's outreach meeting will focus on two of the law's seven rules: the Produce Rule and the Preventative Controls for Human Food Rule. The Produce Rule covers on-farm activities related to covered agricultural commodities, which are those generally consumed raw. Onions and tree fruits are examples of Idaho commodities that will be subject to the FSMA Produce Safety Rule.

The Preventative Controls for Human Food Rule covers the manufacture of human foods. All stakeholders are invited to attend. RSVPs are requested and should be directed to Candi Fitch, Idaho Fruit and Vegetable Association Executive Director, at (208) 722-5111.
