As a former teacher, I found that when learning was fun, students did a lot more learning. So, since I want you to learn something, let's have fun. I'm going to play a sound bite from an important ag industry executive. I'm going to beep out the subject that he is discussing. See if you can guess what it is that he is referring to. Here we go. "we are very optimistic. We have done some significant research that shows that consumers want the benefits in a non-bruising beep which won't show black spots, which is the top complaint amongst consumers about beep and won't turn brown when you cut it open."

All right, so when you heard beep, were you thinking apples or bananas? That's what happens to them, isn't it? We recently did a story on a Canadian company that has produced a non-bruising apple through genetic engineering. It's called the Arctic Apple and of course, because it is GMO, it has created some controversy. But enough of the mystery. We're not talking apples or bananas, we are talking about a new potato, genetically engineered by the JR Simplot company so as not to bruise as easily when it is, in the words of Doug Cole, Director of Company Marketing and Communications for the J. R. Simplot Company: "We have done some significant research that shows that consumers want the benefits in a non-bruising potato which won't show black spots, which is the top complaint amongst consumers about potato and won't turn brown when you cut it open."
