6-13 SS Larry Amos

6-13 SS Larry Amos

A crusty old outdoorsman at 10,000 feet.

I had the most unbelievable experience. I was going to an outfitters camp high in the Rockies of Colorado. The crew and I were driving a rugged four-wheel drive SUV and we were told that there would be a bit of a rough 2 1/2 mile road to get to the base camp. Rough is an understatement. Between boulders, twists and turns and a road so narrow that it was like driving on the edge of a cliff it took 2 1/2 hours to make the journey. When we got there I met Larry Amos. This is our 30th year to here, we started back in 1982 and my objective was to build a high-quality, horseback wilderness outfit where we take people fishing, horseback rides, hunting, lion hunting in the winter, deer and elk hunting in the fall and try and keep it as traditional as the old time elk hunting. We’re trying to do typical Rocky Mountain stuff. This camp here is that 9320 feet and it goes to 12,000 feet. All the peaks around us are 12,000 feet and with quakeys down below and heavy pines up above, clear up to above the timber line. All of our guides are boys that came and went through our school and by the time they get through our 45 day school, that is my responsibility to my hunters is to find people who can qualify to take them out there and show them a good time, kill some elk or whatever they’re hunting and have a good time.
