Laura Johnson, marketing director for the Idaho State Department of Agriculture spoke on exports and international trade at the annual commodity conference of the Idaho Farm Bureau. This is Idaho’s largest general farm organization. “Nearly $2 billion in agricultural products from Idaho are exported annually.” Johnson is talking only about the exports out of country. This does not include exports out of state to US markets. The international market size is huge to Idaho farmers and ranchers. “One in every six rows of potatoes ends up destined for export. Maybe not as a fresh potato, but as a French fry, a dehydrated potato flake, as a tater tot or some sort of processed product as well. Half of Idaho’s entire wheat crop is exported. 15% of all milk produced in the United States ends up in products that are exported. It’s in cheese, it’s in whey, it’s in butter, it’s in milk powder. My point is that exports are very important to Idaho and to agriculture.” Tomorrow a good look at who our customers are and their breakdown.
