With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. Registration is open for the next WAVEx wine research seminar, this one in Woodinville.

The half-day seminar is a condensed version of the popular research seminar, Washington Advancements in Viticulture and Enology, or WAVE, and will focus on managing yeasts and bacteria to improve wine quality, with two experts …

HANSEN … “Dr. Thomas Henick-Kling, he has a microbiology background, native fermentation. He’ll talk about how to work with high ph fruit, cross inoculation, when they use natural yeast starter cultures.”

That’s Washington Wine Commission research program director Melissa Hansen …

HANSEN … “And then on the other end, the bacteria part, you can sometimes get unwanted microorganisms in your winery and Brettanomyces is kind of the winemaker’s nemesis. It can bring in some unwanted aromas and flavors to the wine, and so Dr. Charles Edwards from Pullman, WSU Pullman, he’s been working on Brett for many years and so he’ll be able to share research on how to control it, how to manage it, and keep it at bay.”

HANSEN … “Space is limited so we encourage people to register ahead of time and it’s at the Ste. Michelle Winery Theatre and we’ll have, if they come early, we’ve got coffee and some snacks.”

WAVEx will be held at Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery in Woodinville this Wednesday from 9:00 till noon.
