With today’s Fruit Grower Report, I’m Bob Larson. Whether or not commodity trade was actually a part of the negotiations with Mexico, the President’s threat of steep tariffs gave growers in the U.S., including those here in the Pacific Northwest reason to be concerned.

And the timing, according to U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse, got everyone’s attention …

NEWHOUSE … “It certainly raised a lot of concerns around the new USMCA agreement approval, but you know the President is very determined to improve not only our trading relations, but also our border security and keep Americans safe.”

So, could the President’s tactics be working? …

NEWHOUSE … “It looks to me like the strategy he is using is actually producing results. I’m following this very closely. The Mexican government immediately sent people up to begin negotiations on how they can better respond to the influx of people coming up.”

Newhouse says the nudge to Mexico may have been just enough …

NEWHOUSE … “It’s looking to me like what the President’s doing is having exactly the desired effect. And so, it may have put a lot of people in an uncomfortable position, but in the end, I think we’re going to find ourselves in a much better place both on the border and in our trade relations with Mexico.”

Listen tomorrow when Newhouse talks about other trade deals that, if done correctly and in time, could be just the tonic for what’s been ailing American producers.
