More On The End of the Harvest

More On The End of the Harvest. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.

As the 2015 apple harvest comes to a close so does most of the ag season here in the northwest. Washington is finishing up the very last of the apples and will see the third largest crop in history and that's even though it was a difficult year due to weather. The president of the Washington Apple Commission says there are some new varieties slowly beginning to make their mark on the industry.

FRYHOVER: There are as you suggest a lot of new varieties that are entering the marketplace. I would tell you that most of the new varieties that are available are relatively limited in quantity and have very specific time frames and customer bases that they are going out and trying to increase that awareness for.

Fryhover says that the Apple Commission doesn't deal a lot with those varieties but works hard to market the main varieties that all producers have access to. A look ahead at the next year is not very clear in the crystal ball.

FRYHOVER: Talking about 2016 when it's still 2015 is always a difficult subject to breach but as probably know, Greg, we're a cyclic industry and 2016 is our "On" year so we expect to be back up to traditional levels if not maybe even a little bit larger than traditional as far as crop volume goes so 2016 could prove to be a challenge but a lot of things can change before 2016 as well..

That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network of the West.
