Promoting Pink Lady

Promoting Pink Lady. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.

Apple varieties have this way of ebbing and flowing like the tide but according to Alan Taylor, spokesperson for Pink Lady America, some varieties may eventually be going away.

TAYLOR: No question the 2014-15 Washington apple marketing season has presented both growers and shippers with some challenges especially for several varieties which have come off of a number of good seasons with good returns for the growers. I've been hearing a lot of talk about some of those varieties being evaluated

In some cases orchardists are replacing those varieties with newer, more marketable varieties.

TAYLOR: When you look at the numbers, which we've been doing lately, one of those we think is Pink Lady because we're seeing some really healthy numbers in terms of plantings. When you go back and look at the numbers like we've been doing and you can actually go back as far as 1996 when there were only 4000 trees in the ground and then if you jump ahead all the way to 2009 that number goes up to 4-million trees which is certainly a substantial number.

That number has continued to grown to over 6.4 million trees.

TAYLOR: We've seen a steady growth over the years which has been kind of under the radar of the industry because in terms of the overall industry we've been a small percentage but we've seen some impressive numbers in recent seasons.

More on this tomorrow.
