More On The 2015 Cherry Crop

We know now that the cherry season will more than likely be early this year by about a week or so.We also know that more than likely it won't be a massive, record crop but a fairly manageable one. At least that's the general consensus at this early date. But like last year there should be plenty of cherries ready for the 4th of July holiday and NW Cherries BJ Thurlby says thats good news for retailers.

THURLBY: It's kind of an exciting standpoint if you are a retailer, you're going to have lots of cherry opportunities to promote in June and certainly one of the big questions we get asked as we're traveling around the country meeting with different retail groups is do you think you are going to have product for the 4th of July and that's a really good question every year. and I think this year we can unequivocally say "yes".

Thurlby tells retailers:

THURLBY: Get ready to promote early in June right through the middle and back end of July so it's kind of exciting. It's a different story and I like an earlier start. I know that that might pose problems for a few growers relative to what California has but it will be interesting to see what crop they end up with. Nobody's really sure what they have down there. Most people are sure that they don't have a big crop like they've had in some other years.

As for the amount of cherry acreage in the state it appears to have remained fairly consistent at around 38 to 40-thousand acres.
