Ducks Unlimited Agronomist Steven Dvorak is the primary developer of a tool that you can download from their website and it helps agricultural producers who want to plant winter wheat. The reason that Ducks Unlimited is interested in having more producers realize success with this crop is because it provides great nesting for ducks given that it is undisturbed during the time period that hens are bringing their eggs along. “The primary crop of interest to us is winter wheat. Actually any fall seeded crop is of interest to us and the reason for that is because seated in the fall has very little spring disturbance and by its very construct it’s a grassy plant that is growing early in the spring usually note killed or direct seeded into standing previous crop residues are very attractive to nesting hens with little spring disturbance associated with spring planted crops. Winter wheat is multiple times more productive as a nesting habitat than spring seated cereals or row crops. The agronomy program started promoting winter wheat is a crop and that is basically what we see our role as, is being a champion for the crop and encouraging producers to include it in their rotation. We are helping to get producers to set their goals high and make winter wheat very competitive and very consistently a profitable crop to be considered in a rotation.
