Clean Plant Education

Clean Plant Education

Clean Plant Education. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

One important way to help mitigate disease in your orchard or vineyard is to begin with clean plants. Janet Heath, Program Manager for the Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers.

HEATH: Clean plants are very, very important to the industry and in particular in this instance we are talking about virus free grape-vine plants and the reason that they’re important is that virus infected plants have lower yields, lower sugars, the clusters are smaller, there’s uneven ripening. Just maladies that lend themselves to lesser quality grapes which in turn produce lesser quality wine.

The Wine Grape Growers are offering their Clean Plant Education Summer Tour.

HEATH: This year the WAWGG Summer Tour is going to be presented in Spanish. The Summer Tour is an annual event that takes place every August and we always address some current topic in the industry. There’s a huge educational component but there’s also an element of fun.

Heath talks about this years topic.

HEATH: We’re going to be discussing grapevine viruses and we’re going to start out with a little bit of classroom education talking about the importance of clean plants. Why and how clean plants are made. Symptoms. And then we’re going to hop on the bus and we’re going to head out to WSU-IAREC.

You can sign up for next Thursdays tour by contacting the Wine Grape Growers through their website at wawgg.org.

That’s today’s Fruit Grower Report. I’m Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
