Introducing Kids to the World of Horses

Ag Network’s Greg Martin recently spoke with an amazing young woman by the name of Amberley Snyder, a former Utah FFA state president and National Little Britches Rodeo world champion who is now confined to a wheelchair after wrecking her truck and breaking her back. But she still rides her horses. Snyder told Martin that “When I get on my horses I get to leave my wheelchair - I get to get on and I forget about that.” Nearly anyone who works with horses will tell you the relationship between a rider and their horse is an amazing thing. Sadly, there has been a decline in interest from young people when it comes to horses. That’s why one of the primary goals of American Quarter Horse Association 2013 President Johne Dobbs was to grow efforts to introduce kids to the world of horses. Out of this the “Take Me Riding” youth initiative was born as a website that offers inclusive and affordable ways to reward young people for their horse activity no matter the breed, the type of involvement, or digital device. On the website there is the statement that “horses are beautiful, fun and loyal animals”; a statement that I’m sure Amberley Snyder would be more than in agreement with. Her loyal horse companions have seen her through the most challenging of times.
