2017 was a tough year in the dairy industry due to low milk prices.

However, Steve Schlangen with the Associated Milk Producers says dairies have been hit especially hard by the Canadian supply management system that prevents a lot of American dairy exports from going into the country.

"I think after coming off record profits two and three years ago that we got a little axe on kit managing our cost then and you know land values More Cows does it mean cash rents are going down anytime soon so it's really important for us to probably get more out of each Acres we do would do a better job managing green our cost for animal unit down."

says the Canadian Class 7 system is undercutting American products in foreign markets.

"You know I think cuz I reflect back on my cattle feeding Career One Big Challenge we have in our area is labor difficult time finding skilled educated labor and I add don't see that challenge changing anytime soon I can get more creative than in training new people and in been able to keep businesses moving forward."

He says the uncertainty surrounding the North American Free Trade Agreement negotiations is making things worse, just when the market needs to find as much stability as possible.
