When it comes to Farming, risk management is essential.

In terms of natural disasters, legal risks, marketing and financial, even human resources... Agriculture is an inherently risky business.

Tim McGreevy of the US Dry Pea and Lentil Council explains how risk management products like crop insurance and education training have fueled significant growth in pulse crop acreage over the last two decades.

"the risk management program offered by the usda's risk management agency are really absolutely critical to the growth of our industry that we have seen over the past 20 years. these risk management tools including both a yield option for our producers and a brand new revenue protecting option has really made a huge difference in terms of have growers comfortable with taking the risk to grow these specialty crops on their farm."

McGreevy says they have seen explosive growth in the industry.

"to go from 400,000 acres 20 years ago to 2.7 million acres, that is a huge shift. and what we have seen is where these crops are being grown, we have seen expanded coverage and now a huge explosion in places we have never seen them grown before.
