Hydroponics, simply defined, is the growing of plants in a water and fertilizer solution containing the necessary nutrients for plant growth. It is not a new science, with work being done by researchers as early as the 1600's. Well a company named Crop King has been around for 30 years and has a story you may be interested in. Paul Brentlinger is President and CEO of Crop King and claims that he has a business strategy that farmers can employee to take us into the future of agriculture. "People who are interested in getting into commercial vegetable crop production can contact Crop King which has been in business for 30 years. We can provide a complete solution, from the greenhouse to the growing system to the supplies and seeds as well as the technical support and the know-how. We employ horticulturists, retired growers, technical people that can support all of our growers. One of the things that the press is covering regarding the hydroponic industry is that they are keying in on those warehouses that are using LED's and we go the complete opposite route. Everything we do is promoted to be done in a greenhouse where we are using mother nature's greatest resource which is the Sun. This whole concept of let's eliminate the sun and go completely inside with artificial lighting, I don't necessarily ever see as being a viable, economical alternative. They have been doing research on it for years to where they have much greater population concerns as well as land and space issues that we have here in the U.S. I did a story last year on a company that uses artificial light in a greenhouse and they are doing very well.
