How's the Wheat Look Around the Pacific Northwest?

I visited with Syngenta’s Ric Wesselman at the Washington Grain Commission meeting earlier this week and he shared a look at the wheat crop conditions around the Pacific Northwest.
Wesselman: “Right now, we’ve got a mixed bag across the Northwest — Washington, Oregon and that Northern Idaho and Northern Oregon. We’ve got some areas where the showers came through and in the Horse Heaven Hills it’s perked up a little bit. Some of the crops have been behind because of lack of moisture and now this last recent rain of over an inch and a half up to two inches or so has turned it into a crop. It is still challenging but more positive.”
Unfortunately some areas didn’t receive that moisture and then coming through the winter with uneven stands due to lack of moisture and freezing temperature —- it’s has cause some some issues for some regions. He continues
Wesselman: “I would say from Spokane to the Palouse they are average to they still could use a drink. The further you go west, it gets a little tougher. Northern Panhandle of Idaho looks pretty good, but there are still some showers needed in Grangeville. And across that northern boarder some of that was hit and miss as well of Northern Oregon. So we’ve came a long ways and these showers sure didn’t hurt. I’m hoping that we see another one in the near future — in the next week or so.”
So if you have a rainy Memorial Day weekend in your area, just smile and remember rain makes grain.
