Two Idaho 4-Hers Visit President in White House

Earlier this week two University of Idaho 4-H members met with President Obama and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack in the Oval Office to talk about building opportunities for youth in their communities.
Kimberly Lopez 15, and Lorena Rivera, 14, both from Caldwell, Idaho, joined six other 4-H members during the White House visit. Rivera shares
Rivera: “What I told President Obama was I talked more about the Healthy Living. I was one of the first three Healthy Living Teen Advocates in Idaho. How we have expanded our Teen Advocates. I also told him that we had reached 2,560 in Idaho in this past year of 2104. This year our goal is 2,750 students.”
Lopez shares her conversation with the President
Lopez: “I focused more on the poverty part. And talked about how we need more programs like this — in not only in my community — but in other low-income or undocumented communities. How it keeps kids out of trouble and away from joining gangs as that can be very common. I shared my personal story on how this has helped me as my family is low-income and undocumented.”
I was impressed with these two articulate and goal oriented young ladies. Both serve as Teen Advocates for Healthy Living, an Idaho 4-H program of outreach effort to help young people learn about the importance of a healthy diet, exercise and other healthful habits.
