Washington Grain Commission Donates $5 Million to New WSU Plant Facility

Last week the Washington Grain Commission presented a $5 million gift to expand facilities and advance grain research at Washington State University.
WSU Agricultural Research Center Director Dr. Jim Moyer shares that this is a unique project which is entirely funded through novel sources.
Moyer: “Three entities came together to fund this building. There is $10 million for construction and up to $5 million for equipment. WSU through royalties that are generated from the sales of its wheat varieties is contributing $5 million. The Grain Commission made their $5 million. That $10 million then is buying us the greenhouse facility - the structure. Then USDA ARS — the Agricultural Research Service — that work on the WSU campus and use our facility is donating up to $5 million for equipment.”
The new facility will complement the existing 34,000-square-foot small grain plant growth facility on the Pullman campus and will provide both WSU and ARS scientists with space and technology to conduct groundbreaking research. It will include innovative controlled environment growth rooms, greenhouse spaces and laboratories where plant scientists will address some of the biggest challenges in agriculture and climate.
