Colorado produces a lot of millet. Over 11 million bushels last year in fact. That makes it the number one millet producing state.

"It's a crop that's well suited to Colorado because it can be cut for silage, It can be harvested as grain and it's very drought tolerant."

Glenda Mostek marketing specialist at the state ag department says now the high plains millet growers interested in having a vote of all the growers in Colorado to see if there's interest in creating a market order to help increase awareness of the grain.

Colorado currently has several market order programs covering wheat, corn, sunflower, potatoes milk, dry beans and sweet corn. They are administered by the Commissioner of Agriculture.

A public hearing regarding a proposed millet marketing order is set for June 22 at the USDA-ARS Central Great Plains Research Station in Akron. The Commissioner will accept verbal and/or written testimony at that time.

Interested parties may also submit written testimony to the Colorado Department of Agriculture.
