The Colorado Broadband Office estimates that 77 percent of rural households in the state have access to broadband — defined by the federal government as 25 megabits per second download and 3 mbps upload. It's a share the office would like to see reach 100 percent by 2020.

The Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said recently that while the USDA is seen as the main agency to expand coverage, it will take public and private stakeholders working together to develop the full potential of a nationwide rural broadband system.

While it's not an easy or overnight fix , Tony Neal-Graves, executive director of the broadband office, told the Denver Post robust internet is vital to making Colorado's smaller towns and cities economically vibrant and bringing back those in decline.
