Growing Bison Demand

Growing Bison Demand

One of the recent National Association Farm Broadcasting Trade Talk participants was the National Bison Association. Here is Vice President of the National Bison Association Dave Gehring sharing more about the growing demand for bison.
Gehring: “We’re continually getting our supply outstripped by demand. We have a lot of cardiologists that are touting our product and nutritionists. As well as a lot of folks what we call — eating green — they want to know what’s went into this animal, where it was produced, what it was feed and how it lived. That is a very strong message for us.”
Gehring says it is through the efforts of private ranchers that the species has been brought back to healthy numbers. He shares some advice for ranchers who may be considering beginning to raise bison.
Gehring:”The overhead is typically about the same. You might need an extra strand of barb wire for height in your pasture fences. As far has working facilities — you need a little stronger areas. It doesn’t have to be Fort Knox. A lot of folks over do it because they think have to. If you needing that much of a facility you are probably doing it wrong. So that is one of the things we like to do is to team folks up that are getting into the business with someone in their area that has experience and some input for those folks so they know what to do and more importantly what not to do.”
