Crop Progress Report

NASS Mountain Region Director Bill Meyer shares details from Monday’s Crop Progress Report.
Meyer: “Probably the biggest news last week was the amount of winter wheat that was harvested. As of Sunday, we had 70 percent of the winter wheat harvested compared to the previous week of 33 percent. So they had some nice weather to get it done and that compares the average of 66 percent — so they are a bit ahead of normal. The winter wheat crop sounds like it is coming in good. It is rated 70 percent good to excellent compared to last year at this time when it rated 50 percent good to excellent. The other thing that is going on with our crop progress is our soil moisture supplies are still rated very good for this time of year. Our top soil is rated 79 percent adequate to surplus compared to 82 percent last year but compared to 48 percent adequate to surplus for a five-year average. Our sub-soil moisture supply is rated as 83 percent adequate to surplus compared to the five year average of 43 percent adequate to surplus. It is really nice to see. I think throughout the summer a lot of the places are getting rain showers frequently. Although there has been some hail reported across the state. We’ve had some pretty rough thunder storms out in the eastern plain.”
