Research Examining Irrigation Efficiency

Research Examining Irrigation Efficiency

Recently the Colorado Corn Administrative Committee agreed to fund an additional research project that will examine irrigation efficiency for Colorado farmers using Ogallala Aquifer water for their crops. Colorado Corn Communications Director Eric Brown shares more
Brown: “So the Colorado Corn Administrative Committee just recently funded a project — by Godsey precision Ag LLC. They are going to take an in-depth look at water savings with variable rate irrigation; specifically looking at the holding capacity in that top two feet of soil; what the crop’s water use is throughout the season; looking at the difference between certain amounts of plants per acre and how that impacts water use; how many soil probes are needed in a season to really accurately measure soil moisture. That continuous effort to find that sweet spot of meeting our needs — keeping ag viable. The production levels we need to be at to keep farmers in business but also finding a way for that to happen with less water and less land. We put about 25,000 in that project.”
Brown continues
Brown: “That puts the Colorado Corn Administrative Committee up to about $235,000 devoted to research and with most of that focused on water.”
