Cows Over The Moon

Remember the old nursery rhyme “the  cow jumped over the moon” well California cows, those cheerful bovines on commercials  are now  “over the moon’.  I’m Susan Allen stay tuned on today’s edition of the American Rancher to learn why .We have all seen the cow commercials telling us how happy milk cows are in California,  well thanks to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger they are now ecstatic over the fact they can keep their tails. The GoldenState governor just signed into law a bill banning the cruel practice of tail docking. The Humane Society of the United States aggressively lobbied for the ban and now has   plans to now target other key dairy producing states like Wisconsin, Vermont New York and Idaho.  Apparently the reason some dairy farms still opt to dock tails was because dirty tails can fling manure. But in  2004 the practice was condemned by the American Veterinary Medical Association for being cruel because docking is typically done without numbing, either with sharp shears or a tight rubber band that eventually stops the blood flow to the tail. It is no longer that popular with dairies less than 15 percent of the nations one point five  million dairy cows have their tails docked. Initially Schwarzenegger ridiculed the bill this past summer stating that the  “ legislature ought not be having hearings on cow tails but ought to be focused on a solution to our budget.  For California cows his legal action means that they will be first in the nation with the right to swat flies to their hearts content.
