Marketing Cattle By Video

Can cattle become movie stars? I'm Jeff Keane; I'll be right back to answer that question. Can cattle become movie stars? Well, they can if your ranch uses video marketing to sell your calf crop or even bulls and replacement females. But, I would say they are only "star" quality if they produce a good monetary return for your efforts. Just like directors can get the most out of an actor or actress's performance, video sale representatives can help producers get the most out of their market cattle. An article by Kim Holt in the publication, Charolais Edge, gave an interesting look at the history, advantages, mechanics and strategies of video marketing. Early use of video dates back to the 1970's when slide shows were used to show sale cattle. Jim Davis, a representative for Superior Livestock Auction says he remembers taking photos for marketing slide shows, then progressing to video. The key innovation, he says, from Superior was using satellite and internet. This let every buyer in the world watch and they didn't have to be at a certain location to bid on animals. That change came in 1987, by 198 Superior, the national leader in video marketing filmed 1.2 million head of cattle and now show right at 1.7 million head annually, hiring more than 400 representatives. The largest video market in the western states, Western Video Market, was formed in 1989 and now markets nearly a half million cattle in seventeen states.
