Washington Ag Today September 7, 2011 With the fast-approaching deadline of September 16th for farmers to sign up for the Biomass Crop Assistance Program, researchers at Washington State University and Oregon State University have released a draft document entitled “Camelina Production in the Dryland Pacific Northwest.” That document can be found at www.css.wsu.edu/biofuels

The website also has information about free informational teleconferences coming up later this week on camelina production opportunities.

The Farm Service Agency’s BCAP program will provide a rental payment for participating producers who plant camelina in addition to the revenue received from the crop. Rod Hamilton with the Washington State FSA Office says this might be the only opportunity growers have to get the incentive for growing camelina.

Hamilton: “This program is authorized through the Farm Bill, but when the Farm Bill was passed there was a series of programs, including this one, that were only authorized through 2011. So, in addition to the issue that it would have to be funded next fiscal year, it would take Congressional action to authorize the program for next year. So this sign up is the only one.”

The BCAP program is an effort to jump start the production of camelina, whose oil can be used in aviation fuel.
