Last week, I told you about my very good friend Lee Roberts who in turn told me about his father. His dad worked in public relations for the DuPont company and he was approaching retirement, but before he left the company he got to take over national marketing of Stren monofilament fishing line. Well it turns out that Lees Dad, who was an avid fisherman turned out to be something of an ambassador for the sport and turned a hobby into a media pass time. “ Part of the job that he liked a lot was that he would film and television commercials using locally known fishermen in the local fisheries in the different regions of the country and that meant of course that dad got to go fishing. He also published a weekly column that was syndicated in a bunch of small town, east coast newspapers. It was along the coastline and called the Roving Rod Bender. After he retired, that was something he was really into. He would drive up and down the coast towing a 12 foot aluminum boat with a little outboard motor looking for bass ponds or different waterways, contacting owners where appropriate and fishing in them and then writing columns about them.
